Mix it Up - or Not - Learn to Love Learning

HAVE FUN WITH IT! Variety can be engaging... Try different things. When you do, you reinforce learning and living. Some of learning comes by doing, some can come by reading, watching or listening. Just be sure to take the time to reflect on the experience and draw your own conclusions.

Physically visit your library or bookstore. Enrich your life. Expand your horizons. Read, learn and test the waters. Getting the benefit of others' experiences can add confidence and assuredness and when the author(s) share challenges, they can offer insight and preparation as well. Just make it a point to enjoy the process. Dr. Nel Noddings wrote in, HAPPINESS AND EDUCATION, 2004,

"The best homes and schools are happy places. The adults in them recognize that the highest aim of education - and life - is happiness... Happy children growing in their understanding of what happiness is, seize their educational opportunities with delight, and they will contribute to the happiness of others."

I found this quote in a sometimes controversial yet compelling collection of essays and poems from a book called THE LOVE OF THE FIFTH PARADIGM, 2010. Reserving your right and privilege of reflection, introspection and interpretation is usually a wise decision.

To be sure there are many ways to learn and entertain. Video games, books, audios and videos/movies and sports and social activities and even work offer unique and shared benefits. HAVE FUN WITH IT ALL! Poise yourself for better living by finding ways to enjoy yourself as you learn. Put a little bit of your style in your learning. If you like interacting with people, form study groups. If you are visual, add videos to your learning. If you are a hands on person, include activities that teach, to your reading. Need to find strategies for doing this? Check out your local library or bookstore... and Youtube... Do you even have a library card? No problem, you don't need one to visit and a card is usually easy to obtain.

Young man tries to move a boulder. Boulder does not budge. Mom asks, "Are you using all of your strength?" Young man lowers his shoulder, braces his foot against the ground and presses... No movement... Mother asks again, "Are you using all of your strength?" Son, takes a deep breath, hunkers down in what might be reminiscent of a football or rugby position and leaning against the rock pushes with all his might bearly budging the big rock. Mother asks, "Are you using all of your strength?" A bit irritated the young man says, "YES MOM, I am using all of my strength!" Mother replies, "No you haven't. You did not ask for help."

Sometimes we act as if we are independent islands, solely and wholly responsible, or, not at all responsible ("not my problem"). The truth is, we are all connected and it serves us to use all of the resources available or at least some of the resources available. Do you use your Academic Center? Can you use the internet differently?

Aside from your favorite music video, Youtube has many study resources, tips and tricks available. You may be surprised at what comes up when you go to youtube or google and do a search for "Study tips" or "Math tips." Want a chuckle down as you buckle down to learn, do a search on "Math Rap." Resources abound, just verify with your professor or advisor the accuracy or what you view and plow ahead.

Skype and ooVoo make it possible for study groups to gather together virtually from all over the country, perhaps the world over, surely you can connect with a classmate. You can have fun while getting your work done. Add it to what you already do. Most students just don't put enough time in to begin with to be maximally successful. Next time you surf the net, remember your classes.

Go to your or another college website and cruise the resources. Again, do an internet search. It is amazing how many free lectures you can find when you look. "itunes" seems to be a favorite medium for professors. I am not saying you can get free credit but it is great to be able to capitalize on lectures from colleges and universities including Ivy league institutions. Incidentally, I am not saying you can't find "free" or low cost credits either. Ever heard of the CLEP Test? You might want to look into it.

Want to make connections but not quite sure who to give your phone number out to? In the 21st century there appear to many resources to balance the risk. Visit www.saynow.com and see how you can receive a FREE phone number that you may use as voice mail or text messaging or even as a relay to your phone. And get this, you also become a part of a new social network. You can also create voice messages on your account for people to enjoy. Your present phone number can remain private.

If you have a study group you can send message out to the entire group at the same time and everyone who is connected in your network can contact each other. SayNow intends to be a part of the next wave, social networking with audio capacity. Many celebrities are already on board providing still another way to connect to their fans. A recording of Janet Jackson returning a call from one of her fans is available for you to hear for example.

Saynow was acquired by Google so I wouldn't be at all surprised if it grows in leaps and bounds. They are betting that the computer will all but replace telephones as primary communication sources in favor of services like Skype and SayNow. Presently as I understand it, you can interface with SayNow using either a phone or computer. As always, be careful, mindful and protective of personal details. This is just information sharing not an endorsement. Your contacts in essence hang out on the SayNow network much like they might on Facebook, Twitter etc. so there is little or no need to store phone numbers. I was moved to apply this to both this blog and my http://www.cliftonmcknight.wordpress.com/ blog which will also have audio. I hope it adds to your day.

I endeavor to treat my mind and spirit daily with a little prayer, meditation and affirmation, then I get to work. I was busily focused at my desk at work and a wonderful thing happened! I received a knock on the door. At times when we are trying to finish a task we can be off center when something interrupts that flow . I am so glad that I followed my morning ritual today because that did not occur and I was poised to receive a magnificent energy from the passer by.

His name is Chuck Kroner. He is a recent retiree who reminded me through his conversation and spirit that angels still walk the earth in human form. As he shared and asked questions of me my heart and spirit were filled with the joy of this awareness.

Please, pause, focus on all that is good with you and the world, then drink deeply from the positive spirits around you. The wonderful thing is, if you take the time to treat your spirit prior to quenching your thirst, you will provide a refreshing elixir for others as well. We are then energized to continue making a difference where the world is not yet right. Enjoy today and help make someone else’s day.

So I went on this kick to learn more about www.freecycle.org and SO MUCH MORE came in. While some of the resources noted I have tried myself, there is so much that I am endeavoring to share the information only. This does not constitute endorsement as I have yet to use all of them as I have with "Freecycle" and "Recycle" (previous post).

In preparing the previous post I did a search for "freecycle" and an AARP link came up. It was long link to Yahoogroups. Apparently "yahoogroups" hosts a lot of useful stuff. Trash or Treasure - You Decide

If you don't mind "Used" or "Second Hand" stuff, you can get some of what you need while being kinder to the environment and being less wasteful yourself. All over the country and in over 80 countries online groups are offering and posting their previously used and sometime even unopened and never used STUFF for FREE! This eases the level of waste at landfills, which is kinder to the environment and can save you and others money too! You can also post good stuff that you no longer use for someone who can use it.

Visit www.freecycle.org/ to get started. A word of Advice- This resource is VERY active so you may want to dedicate a separate email address to it or have some really good filters. You can receive MANY EMAILS everyday offering and asking for free stuff.

Once I tapped into this I found a yahoo group that has the same concept and calls themselves "Recycle" instead of "Freecycle". Try them out, save money, save the earth and maybe save someone else.

Times are hard. More and more students are looking to save a few more dollars. If you are ordering books online. ORDER THEM NOW! You really cannot afford to begin class without the proper tools, like oh, I don't know... say YOUR TEXTBOOKS! This is a time for you to plan, prepare and prioritize. Starting late can result in poor performance. College classes are often fast paced, making catch up more difficult to accomplish. Order your books early and have a contingency for delays. Some suggestions are included the list below. Add to it and share insights with your friends.

1] Visit the reference section of the library to see if textbook is on reserve.
2] Ask professor to put it on reserve, even temporarily.
3] Check with Counseling or Student Center for temporary assistance.
4] Check off campus libraries and used book stores. Be aware, the edition may be different but hopefully the first few days should be absolutely the worse case scenario for you.
5] Check out the campus early and expect FULL PARKING LOTS!
6] Don't work so hard; it may cause you to perform badly. Kind of silly working to pay for school and repeating the courses over again because you worked to much to pass isn't it. Use that noodle ;-)
7] Try to establish a backup plan for everything. Even if you only need one of 10 backup plans, that one can make all the difference. Be prepared and enjoy your classes and the college community.

Remember the College Level Examination Program (CLEP)and earn credits just by passing exams. For a list of courses you can visit http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/about.html or if you go to your college website and type clep in the search box.

If you have college credit and you have spent time in the work world you may be able to obtain Credit for Life Experience. Contact the institution of interest and inquire. Compare what they tell to what institutions like the University Of Maryland University College have to offer (UMUC). UMUC has positioned itself with the returning adult learner in mind offering online, evening and weekend courses in abundance if not entirely. Now it is more convenient to get that degree if you really want it. So, who wants it?

Attend George Washington University – For Free!

The George Washington University School of Engineering and Applied Science is currently seeking student applications for its 2010-2011 computer security and information assurance scholarship.

Transfer students receive an award that covers the costs for their full tuition, fees, books, and course materials. Students also earn an annual (9-month) stipend.

In return for those outstanding benefits, a student needs to participate in two years of study in information assurance and computer security and complete a paid internship with a federal agency. Upon graduation, students are also required to serve in a two-year paid employment position with the federal government. While at GW, students must also maintain a 3.2 gpa to retain their scholarship and continue in the program.

So students get free tuition, a monthly stipend, and a guaranteed job after graduation, just for participating!

This scholarship is only available to students who will be completing their studies at MC in May and are looking to enroll at a four-year school beginning in fall 2010.

Transfer students are eligible to apply if they have a 3.0 gpa and plan to major at GW in either Mathematics, Biometrics, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Programming, Computer Support, Database Administration, Computer Systems Analysis, Operations Research, Information Security (Assurance), Forensic Science, Business Management, Business Administration, Public Policy, Public Administration, or another area related to computer security and information assurance.
